Exhibition | Transitions
The 'Transitions' exhibition showcases the outcome of a transformative mentorship, where I had the privilege of working with my first-choice mentor, Ann Vardenga, a person of both creative and academic intelligence.
Working alongside my Master of Arts in Photography, where I focused on flowers and abstraction tied to subconscious and conscious associations with colour, the mentorship offered a contrasting exploration. I delved into black and white photography, stripping flowers of colour to highlight their structure and delicate strength—a reflection of the resilience we find in nature and ourselves… or a project I could relate to as productive procrastination 😊
The program expanded my creative approach, allowing me to explore new methods of presenting my work and forge a lasting connection with my mentor.
It was also an insightful wild ride to experience how the art world understands photography, how different our experimentation and project development can be compared to other mediums, how that translates and doesn’t translate with other mediums and working out how to communicate that, especially when you’ve only been presenting work to fellow photographers for the past 12 months.
Working within a mentorship with a cross section of other mediums was just as insightful as working within photography with my mentor.
This mentorship not only deepened my understanding of photography but also broadened my perspective on how art, in all its forms, can be interpreted, challenged, and communicated across different mediums.
